Lake Maggiore

Discover the Borromean Gulf

The Borromean gulf is located in the middle of Lake Maggiore, between Stresa and Verbania Pallanza.

Inside are the Borromean islands, Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre. In the sixteenth century the Borromeo family became owners of the Isola Bella and Isola Madre, and began their transformation by building palaces and gardens.

Lake Maggiore is the second in Italy both in terms of surface (212 square km) and depth (380 meters), but it is certainly the most beautiful, especially thanks to its 11 islands, 5 of which are located in the Borromean Gulf.

Isola Bella is certainly the most famous with its seventeenth-century palace and its Baroque gardens.
The Baroque garden of Isola Bella with its 10 terraces is considered the most beautiful of its type in Italy.

Isola dei Pescatori with its characteristic village hosts a delightful market every day.

Isola Madre is dominated by the English-style botanical garden, with thousands of plants and flowers, while the palace features period furniture and the puppet theatre. In the gardens of Isola Madre, peacocks, pheasants and parrots mingle with the visitors, adding a further touch of colour.

The Malghera island is located between the Bella and Pescatori islands and is also called the island of lovers due to its small size.

The Island of San Giovanni, located in front of Vebania Pallanza, is the only one that cannot be visited by tourists and which serves as a summer residence for the brother of Prince Giberto Borromeo, Count Carlo. When on the island of San Giovanni the red and blue flag of the family flies, passing nearby you could meet Lavinia Borromeo with her husband John Elkann married in 2004 on the Mother Island, or Beatrice Borromeo with Pierre Casiraghi, or even Matilde Borromeo with her husband Antonius von Furstenberg, also married on Isola Bella in 2011.

In conclusion, Lake Maggiore offers an infinite variety of landscapes for all tastes, you only have the choice to visit it using our modern and comfortable boats.
